Campaigns are starting to kick off as the Terry Fox Run celebrates its 45th year of raising funds for cancer research in honour of Fox’s Marathon of Hope.
More than 35 communities across Saskatchewan will be taking part in the Terry Fox Run. Moose Jaw’s event is set for Sunday, Sept. 14, at Wakamow Valley at the Skating Oval.
After a brief hiatus, the Moose Jaw Kin Club is back hosting the Terry Fox Run.
“There will be t-shirts for sale. We’ll have some family fun games. We’ll have a barbecue going on and really (we) want to get people out, any abilities. You can walk, you can run. If you have little kids and you want to have them in a wagon or something like that, that’s all fine. We have a colour corner for the kids. It’s just a good family day at the park,” said Tanya Heisler with the Moose Jaw Kinette Club.
Those looking to participate can register online or on the day of the event. Donation sheets are available in hard copy or online as well.
Over the years, Terry Fox Runs across the country have raised millions of dollars for cancer research.
“Over the years, we are at, full revenue including investment income last year alone was $40.7 million. That’s just last year. That’s crazy. Of course, all the funds raised go to research for cancer. To date, Terry Fox has raised $950 million,” Heisler said.
She added that all ages and abilities are welcome to take part. Even if children will be taking part in the school Terry Fox Runs, they are still encouraged to join the community run.
“Schools often do runs at the school. They do that after, but we would like to encourage families to bring your kids out. You can come to the community event and maybe they learn a little bit about Terry and they bring a little bit more to their school event as well. They can always take part in both,” Heisler said.
Participants can run around the Skating Oval loop or take part in the five- and 10-kilometre routes through the walking paths in Wakamow Valley.
