Selkirk RCMP report a tragic outcome after a boat was found overturned on Lake Winnipeg earlier this week.
On August 20 at 3:40 p.m., officers received a call about a capsized vessel located about two kilometres northwest of the Balsam Harbour Marina. The operator of the boat was not found at the scene.
“The operator of the boat was not located,” notes RCMP in a statement.
The East Beaches Fire Department responded right away and launched a boat to search the surrounding water.
“Additional resources, including the Canadian Coast Guard, RCMP Marine Services and the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team, were contacted and were en route to provide assistance,” says RCMP.
At around 5:45 p.m., the fire department found the body of the operator a short distance from the overturned boat.
“The 77-year-old male from Winnipeg, who was wearing a life jacket, was pronounced deceased,” adds RCMP.
Selkirk RCMP continue to investigate.
