The annual Home Runs for Huntington's baseball tournament raised thousands of dollars for a family in need.

The event took place at the Kinsmen Park ball diamond on Saturday (Aug. 16), with hundreds of residents taking part in the tournament.

In total, $4,386.50 was raised through a variety of methods, with the funds going towards the Huntington Society of Canada and the family of Greg Belton, a Strathmore resident who was diagnosed with Huntington's disease.

According to Alberta Health Services, Huntington's Disease is a genetic condition that causes parts of the brain to break down. This leads to rapid, jerky movements that cannot be controlled, along with the gradual loss of mental abilities. The disease affects 1 in 7,000 people.

"Thank you to everyone who played, helped set up, take down, volunteered or donated through any of the many available options," wrote Jessica Janes, a longtime friend of the Beltons.

A total of $570 was raised through a 50/50 raffle, with the money being split between the society and the Belton family. Another $71.85 was raised through bottle sales.

Registration, hats, and shirts netted the event another $2,383, with $100 of that total going towards the Huntington Society of Canada.

The Belton Box also raised $1,361.65 to support the Belton family following Greg's diagnosis.

The event also featured a community BBQ, face painting, kids' games, and a special appearance by the Strathmore Fire Department.
