The 2025-2028 Leisure User Rates were presented at the most recent meeting of Weyburn City Council on August 11th and will take effect September 1st.

"User rates historically have gone up between two and a half and five per cent year-over-year for most categories. Some areas, depending on the expenses over the last couple of years, have gone up, previously, up to 10 per cent. So we try to keep them as minimal as possible just to work on our recovery rate of 50 per cent goal," explained Richard Henning, the Director of Leisure Services with the City of Weyburn.

That said, the user rates for the Credit Union Spark Centre and the Weyburn Leisure Centre will see no increase throughout the approved period.

"Just with the Leisure Centre being out of service for the indoor pool, and the feedback from the community, and the rates that are there currently are reflective across the industry for similar services, so we didn't want to increase that and cause undue strain on the community."

Other amenities, such as the ice arenas, will reflect a typical increase in rental rates. Henning explained that the rental rates are much higher for Red Wings playoff games.

"When some user groups, like the Red Wings, whenever they make it into playoffs, there's a lot more strain on the facility," he noted. "At the start of the year, we'll go from a fan base of 350 to 400 people at an event, and then come playoffs, with a very strong race like last year, there were 1,700 people in the facility. So it just takes about triple the amount of time to clean the facility and have it ready and turned around for the other minor sports groups the next morning, and that takes a lot of effort and a lot more staff on the ground."

During the last Council meeting, Councillor Kellie Sidloski said she had done some research, discovering that Weyburn's rental rates for hockey games at the arenas are comparable and even on the low end to other communities of the same size.
