A new community-based art exhibition is calling on local artists and creators to share their work in a project focused on mental health. The Portage Learning and Literacy Centre (PLLC) is inviting submissions for The Art of Healing: Exploring Mental Health Through Creativity.
Organizers Cora Pohl and Rachel Pilipchuk say the idea is to create more opportunities for artists in Portage la Prairie while also building an open space to reflect on health and healing.
An accessible project for all
All community members are welcome to submit original works. Submissions can be in any medium, from painting and ceramics to video, music, or even interpretive dance. The piece must reflect mental health, healing, personal experience, or related themes.
“It doesn't need to be on a canvas,” says Pilipchuk, youth life skills project leader at PLLC. “We've got ceramics, mixed media, and even the technology to showcase video work.”
Organizers stress that accessibility is central to the project. Supplies are still available for anyone who may not have the space or resources to create their work.

Submissions open indefinitely
Currently, the first exhibition at PLLC is delayed due to building renovations. That means submissions remain open until further notice. Pieces can be dropped off at the PLLC Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
While the big final show is planned for March at Prairie Fusion’s atrium, organizers are also in talks with local schools and community hubs to host smaller rotating exhibits throughout the year.
Encouraging expression through art
The project began with $2,000 set aside for supplies, which funded free drop-in nights earlier this year. Those sessions gave artists a chance to gather, create, and connect with others who have experienced mental health.
“As an artist, it’s really hard to put yourself out there,” says Pohl. “So, we thought this would be a great opportunity for folks to showcase their art without having all the attention on them.”

How to take part
Submissions are free, and forms are available at PLLC, through signs posted in town with QR codes, or by contacting the organizers directly.
“We want to break down as many barriers as we can,” notes Rachel. “If you don’t have the space or supplies or even find reading forms difficult, we’ll work with you.”
