Family Tribute
Elvira Sudfeld (nee Peters) passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, at Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg.
Elvira was born on March 16, 1942, in the Molotschna Colony, Ukraine, to Sara Abrahams (nee Peters). Her biological father, Heinrich Goertzen, passed away before her birth. As a young child, Elvira moved to Paraguay with her mother. While in Paraguay, her mother married Kornelius Abrahams, and together they raised a growing family. In 1960, the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg.
She married Martin Sudfeld, with whom she shared a lifetime of dedication and faith for 44 years. Elvira was an active member of Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church, where she was involved with Bible studies and seniors’ coffee times.
Elvira worked as a Registered Nurse, where her compassion and care touched many lives. She also served for a year at Hospital Mennonita Km 81, a leprosy centre in Paraguay, reflecting her deep commitment to serving others.
She loved gardening, cooking, fermenting, baking, preserving, and crocheting. These interests, paired with her generosity, thoughtfulness and kindness, created a warmth that made people feel welcome and cared for.
Elvira is survived by her husband Martin; her siblings, Magdalena (Gerhart) Kramer, Anna (John) Pauls, Harry (Catherine) Abrahams, Luise Abrahams, Beate Abrahams-Bolen (Lionel Dupuis) and Ruth Abrahams; one sister-in-law, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Kornelius and Sara Abrahams, and her siblings, Kaethe Abrahams and Martha Greenwood.
The family thanks the healthcare staff who supported her with compassion as her health declined.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home.
