A security guard is recovering after being assaulted Thursday evening.
Winnipeg police say a 28-year-old man attempted to leave a grocery store in the 600 block of Stafford Street with meat products he had not paid for.
A security guard attempted to intervene. However, the suspect pulled out a knife and attempted to stab the guard. He then punched the guard, resulting in minor facial injuries.
The man fled empty-handed before police arrived.
Officers located and arrested the suspect about 45 minutes later in the 100 block of Osborne Street. Officers also found the knife and seized it as evidence.
During his arrest, the man became uncooperative and belligerent with officers, yelling profanities and refusing to identify himself. He was later identified through fingerprint analysis by members of the Forensic Identification Section.
He is now facing a long list of charges including robbery, possession of a weapon, obstruct peace officer, and four counts of fail to comply with a release
He remains in custody.
