Western Canada is heading into a hot finish to August, with Alberta seeing the most intense heat while Manitoba settles into a steady warm spell.

Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Crawford Luke notes that Manitoba, including Portage la Prairie, can expect several days of above-average warmth.

“It looks like we’re really gonna warm up across basically all of Western Canada. A lot of this heat is going to be centered over Alberta. So we’re not gonna see it get as hot in Manitoba, but it certainly looks like it’s gonna be a pretty warm stretch to basically close out the month,” he says.

Luke adds that scattered rain showers could pass through later in the week, with chances of thunderstorms over the weekend. He says the Labour Day long weekend itself is expected to stay warm, carrying into the middle of next week before temperatures dip closer to seasonal levels.

No heat warnings expected

Luke explains that daytime highs in Manitoba should stay in the mid to high 20s, but not quite enough to trigger official alerts.

“I don’t know if we’ll see heat warnings issued necessarily because I don’t think our daytime highs are gonna quite hit criteria, and even if they do, the overnight lows are still going to be kind of cool because again, the nights are starting to get longer,” he says.

He continues that the region should see “an extended period of warm temperatures with a lot of sunny days mixed in as well.”
