The best weather of the summer holidays may come in the last week.
Before the kids go back to school, it’s expected to be a warm and dry week in Humboldt and the surrounding area.
Environment Canada’s Crawford Luke says that it’s shaping up for some extended heat.
“We've got this really warm ridge of high pressure building across the west. It looks like it's going to be centered around northern Alberta, northern Saskatchewan, in the Northwest Territories, but basically all of Western Canada is going to be getting into warmer than normal temperatures as a result of this.”
Beginning on Tuesday, the daytime high will be around 30°C and it’s expected to remain in that range for the week.
It was also a hot start last week, but the difference for this week will be the lack of humidity, says Luke.
"As we get to late August, it kind of gets harder and harder to hold on to some of that humidity. And we do tend to dry out normally anyways. So definitely looks like that will be a theme with this with this heat.”
While there isn’t any precipitation in the forecast, Luke noted there’s a possibility of some scattered showers in the forecast later in the week, in particular the eastern region of Saskatchewan which could include Humboldt.
The temperatures may be above normal this week, but Luke says that there shouldn’t be any heat warnings issued this week, with evenings cooling off the heat.
“The nights have been getting longer, and they'll continue to get longer. So, it looks like even with that, we should still cool off in the nighttime.”
It was a gusty end of the week, with wind gusts peaking around 60 km/h. Luke explains that this week, that the wind will feel more like a summertime breeze.
“For the first few days, certainly we have high pressure basically rate over the prairies. And so that's really brought a really calm and stable air mass with really light winds with it.”
He noted the wind from the south may pick up a bit at the end of week.
The Labour Day long weekend is the chance for families to enjoy the summer break and the good news from Luke is that early indications are the weekend will continue to feel like a summer paradise but said there could be a chance of some scattered showers emerging on the weekend throughout the province.
Luke said at this point there isn’t any pattern change until the middle of next week.
