Bertha Elizabeth Szautner
March 6, 1944 – August 23, 2025
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Bertha Elizabeth Szautner, 81 years, of Saskatoon and formerly of Humboldt, on Saturday, August 23, 2025 with family by her side at Samaritan Place, Saskatoon. She was a remarkable woman, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
Bertha was born on March 6, 1944, to Adam & Elizabeth (nee Wourms) Dobmeier, in Pilger, SK, a small town that shaped her values of family, friendship, and community. Those roots carried through her whole life, no matter where she lived. She obtained her education in Pilger, and spent her working career caring for others; working at St. Elizabeth Hospital and the majority of her time at the St. Elizabeth Convent working along side her sisters.
At just 14 years old, Bertha met the love of her life, Ken Szautner. A young romance blossomed into a lifelong partnership. They were married on October 27, 1962, in Pilger, and together they built a life full of love, resilience, and devotion to family.
Their journey took them from Saskatoon, where their daughter Donna was born, to Watson, where they had their son Dean, then back to Humboldt. In 1990, Ken and Bertha moved to Kelowna, BC, a life-long dream of theirs. Bertha worked as a Care Aid, pouring her compassion and warmth into the lives of those she served. Her kindness and her ability to make others feel loved were constant threads in her life.
In 1997, Ken and Bertha returned to Humboldt, drawn home by what mattered most to them - their growing family. Bertha’s heart belonged to her children and grandchildren. She delighted in every moment with them, whether it was celebrating milestones, sharing a laugh, or simply being present. Family wasn’t just important to her - it was everything!
After Ken passed away in 2016, Bertha faced one of the most difficult chapters of her life. Yet, even in her grief, she found strength in her community. At Gabriel Place in Humboldt, she surrounded herself with friends, neighbors, and endless social gatherings. She loved people, and people loved her.
In 2021, Bertha made the move to Saskatoon. She embraced new surroundings at Preston Park 2, later Trinity Manor, and finally, in 2024, Samaritan Place, where she had the great blessing of being next door to her sister, Sister Philomena. That companionship was a gift at the end of her life.
Bertha leaves behind a family who adored her: her daughter Donna and husband Owen, with grandchildren Nicole (Jared) and children Olivia and Ronan, and Stacey (Brett) and daughter Norah; her son Dean and wife Marilyn, with grandchildren Chantel (Max) and children Zoey and Kade, Dylan, and Christina (Matt) and child Adrian. Each one of them carries a piece of her love, her laughter, and her wisdom.
Bertha is also survived by her siblings Raymond Dobmeier, Sylvester Dobmeier, Sr. Philomena Dobmeier, and Margaret Clendanan, in-laws Donna Dobmeier, Loretta Dobmeier, Gordon Szautner, Kevin Szautner, Bruce Szautner, Irene Szautner, and Ray Tebbe; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Bertha was predeceased by her husband Ken Szautner; parents Adam & Elizabeth (nee Wourms) Dobmeier; brothers: Martin (Katie) Dobmeier, Herman (Rose) Dobmeier, Andrew, and Tony; sisters: Sr. Regina Dobmeier, Veronica (Steven) Horacki, Francis (John) Masse, Marie Dobmeier, and Loretta (Pete) Harms; and in-laws Maude Dobmeier, Harvey Szautner, Marilyn Tebbe, Russel Szautner, Pat Szautner, Gail Szautner, and Doreen Szautner
She loved deeply, she cared selflessly, and she taught all of us the importance of family and friendship. Her legacy is not only in the memories we hold, but in the way she inspired us to love one another.
A Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, August 28, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Augustine Parish, Humboldt, celebrated by Fr. Colin Roy. A Private Family Committal took place at St. Augustine Columbarium. Memorial donations may be directed to Lung Saskatchewan or Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan.
