With the first day of school around the corner, the City of Moose Jaw is advising parents and drivers to be on the lookout for significant changes to parking rules and bus locations around city schools. New signage has been installed over the summer to improve safety and standardize traffic control, and officials are urging extra vigilance to ensure a safe start to the academic year.

The most noticeable change is the updated parking signage, which has been redesigned to align with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC), a national standard for road signs.

Drivers are advised to pay close attention, as the new signs display enforcement times in 24-hour (military) time. The restricted hours will be shown as 08:00 to 18:00, which corresponds to 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The city is also reinforcing existing parking bylaws with new signs aimed at improving sightlines near pedestrian crossings. According to Traffic Bylaw No. 5556, parking is prohibited:

  • Within ten metres of a marked pedestrian crosswalk.
  • Within ten metres of a street intersection.
  • Within five metres of a fire hydrant.
  • Within two metres of a driveway or curb crossing.

Specific changes have also been implemented for the new joint-use school on South Hill. Parents of students attending Coteau Hills Elementary and Our Lady of Hope are advised that the designated school bus pick-up and drop-off zone for both schools is located on the west side of the building on Fairmont Road.

For students taking public transit, City Transit's Route 4 - Westmount will service the new school with two new stops: one at Wellington Drive & Triton Street, and another at Wellington Drive & Fullerton Street. The City also reminds residents that bus tickets and passes can be conveniently purchased through the HotSpot mobile app.

"The City wishes all students a safe school year," the official release concluded.
