As the Labour Day long weekend nears, many Manitobans are making plans for one last outdoor escape before back-to-school routines and cooler temperatures take hold. Prime campsites may already be snapped up, but Manitoba Parks says there's still no shortage of natural beauty to explore, and the summer camping season was a solid success, despite some weather challenges.
“We’ve actually had a pretty good season overall,” says Elisabeth Ostrop, Manager of Recreation and Education Services for Manitoba Parks. “Reservations are up about four per cent compared to the same period last year.”
This summer had a mix of extreme conditions, including early-season drought, heavy rains in August, and thick smoke from wildfires. Even so, park usage held strong, with many residents continuing to take advantage of the outdoors.

Long weekend adventurers
While many campsites are already booked for the Labour Day long weekend, Ostrop shared a few tips for those still hoping to make a spontaneous getaway.
“It really depends on what level of service you're looking for. If you’re hoping for electrical service or more developed sites, it’ll be pretty tough to find anything at this point,” she notes.
But not all hope is lost.
“There could still be basic sites available at places like Spruce Woods. Generally, the further you go from Winnipeg, the more availability you might find. Duck Mountain is a good example," she says.
And cancellations happen more than people realize, especially near the end of summer.
“People’s plans change, especially as school starts back up, so it never hurts to check back and see what’s opened up,” she adds.
Exploring without camping
For those without a tent or trailer, day-use areas are a great way to enjoy the final stretch of summer.
“There are beautiful day-use areas close to home, such as Portage Spillway Provincial Park. St. Ambroise Beach is another lovely spot, and if the weather holds, you might even get in one last swim,” she says.
From hiking and birdwatching to fishing or a simple picnic, there are countless ways to enjoy the season without staying overnight. This weekend’s forecast looks promising, with warmer temperatures making for ideal outdoor conditions.
“We’ve had a few chilly days recently, but it looks like the weather’s turning around, so it should be a nice send-off for summer."

A friendly reminder
Manitoba Parks is also reminding visitors to be respectful of both the environment and fellow campers.
“Park entry is free this year, so there’s no better time to explore. If you are going camping, remember that it’s a shared space, and noise travels, so be respectful of your neighbours," she says.
That includes being mindful of generator use.
“Especially on basic sites, don’t let your generator run constantly. You really shouldn’t need it for air conditioning anymore,” she advises.
With free access and warm weather on the forecast, Labour Day weekend may be one of the best chances to connect with nature before the season shifts.
“There’s so much natural beauty right in our backyard. Whether it’s a hike, a paddle, or just a picnic with friends, this is a great time to get out there.”
