With the start of the school year just around the corner, Saskatchewan RCMP are reminding parents, students and drivers to take extra care on the roads and around schools.
Officers say now is the time for parents and caregivers to go over basic safety rules with children. That includes crossing at marked locations, making eye contact with drivers before stepping out, and staying alert by putting away distractions such as phones or headphones.
The RCMP also highlighted school bus safety, advising kids to wait at least five big steps from the curb until buses come to a complete stop, and to always cross in front of the bus so the driver can see them.
For those biking or scootering to class, officials recommend wearing a CSA-approved helmet, following posted traffic signs, and using a bell or horn to alert others.
Drivers are also being asked to do their part by slowing down and staying alert in school zones. Police say motorists should be prepared to yield to children walking or biking, and must always stop when a bus extends its stop arm.
“As school zones become significantly busier next week, we’re urging all drivers to slow down and stay alert,” said S/Sgt. Jill McLaren, who leads the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Community Safety and Wellbeing Unit. “Extra caution can go a long way – especially when watching for children who may be learning to navigate busy roads or finding their bus for the first time. Your attention and care can help make the start of the school year safe and positive for everyone.”
The RCMP say taking simple steps now can help ensure a safe and smooth start to the school year across the province.
