Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued an Air Quality Warning for the region.

The warning was issued on Tuesday (Sept. 2) and affects Wheatland County, including Strathmore, Lyalta, and Carseland.

"Smoke is causing very poor air quality and reduced visibility," wrote Environment Canada. "Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour."

Infants, young children, seniors, those who work outdoors, and those with an existing chronic health condition should avoid strenuous activities outdoors.

The group asks that residents limit time spent outdoors, as heavy smoke puts everyone's health at risk.

"You may experience mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough," added the group. "More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough."

"If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance."

For those who need to spend time outdoors, Environment Canada recommends wearing a respirator mask to reduce exposure to smoke particles.
