This summer, the kids over at the Winkler Daycare Centre had a chance to learn about some of the community’s helpers in a way they won’t soon forget.

ECE-in-training, Vera Siemens, said the whole idea grew out of a moment at the art table.

“They were drawing some pictures, and one of the kids asked me to draw a truck, and I was like, well, yeah, I can draw a truck. And I did. And they asked more and more...” she said, “And in this moment, Ang [Ang Nickel, Daycare Director] came in. And the idea was, ‘Write a letter to the police officers or the firefighters.’ And that’s what we did.”

After sending their emails, the kids were thrilled when both departments showed up to visit, give demonstrations, and let them check out some of their gear.

Learning about Firefighters

Some of the kids shared stories about what they picked up from the firefighters. A young man named Anthony explained something he remembered, “They put the extra hoses onto the fire hoses if they want to make it even longer.”

Emily said that she remembered that the Firefighter job can be a serious one, “They might get hurt if they are in a fire.” She also mentioned other parts of the job that came up, “We talked about saving animals. He had to save a horse, a cat, and some other animals.”

Anthony chimed in, saying, “He had to save a cat from in the furnace.”

Excited to meet the Police

Anthony was quick to point out that he was the one to reach out to the police.

“I sent a[n] email to the police. Like the police officer. We [got] to see the drone, it took a picture, and we also saw other stuff,” Anthony said.

Malachi, another young man in the room, recalled that, “They also brought the car in through the fence.”

Among the class’s favourite parts of the presentations were sitting in the police cruiser “Where the bad guys go,” and climbing into the fire truck that was brought to the centre.

Siemens says the visits made for an exciting summer at Winkler Daycare Centre, giving the kids a fun, hands-on look at the important work local first responders do every day.
