Alix has many things to offer for visitors. Town of Alix
Categories

Chances are that many Albertans are familiar with the small town of Alix – even if they’ve never been there.

Located on Highway 12, about 50 km northeast of Red Deer, Alix was where Irene Parlby (one of the “Famous Five” who won the vote for women) put down roots in the late 19th century, and from where she represented the old Lacombe riding as MLA for 14 years.

Her story, and that of the town, is prominent at the Alix Wagon Wheel Museum on 50th St – one of many attractions that visitors can discover in Alix.

“The museum is a great place,” says Chelsie Giesbrecht, Municipal Clerk/Economic Development for the community. “It’s known for Irene Parlby, who fought for so many things. It’s a popular place to go.”

Tourists and day-trippers will find plenty to see and do in Alix’s historic downtown. The small boutiques and markets are a shopper’s dream, and delicious food is always on offer at the local restaurants.

Then there’s Alix Lake at the end of Main St. Swimmers, wakeboarders and anyone else who simply enjoys a day at the lake will appreciate the sanded beach and calm water, and a playground invites kids to have fun while their parents take a break.

“I love our lake,” says Giesbrecht. “It’s kind of a hidden gem, and people are really just now starting to know about it more broadly. We’re really lucky to have something like that to enjoy and have access to.”

Outdoor enthusiasts can also hike the 6.3 km trail that follows the lakeshore. Birdwatchers will be pleasantly surprised at the diversity of birds and nesting areas nearby.

“Our nature trail is full of wildlife and is known for birdwatching,” Giesbrecht explains. “People love to come out here to spot different types of birds around the lake.”

For visitors looking to stay an extra day or two, Alix has a seasonal campground that’s open between May Long Weekend and September Long Weekend, weather dependent. Other Alix attractions include a skatepark and a nine-hold golf course, just 2 km outside town.

“Alix is a great little community,” says Giesbrecht. “It’s a wonderful little place to visit and explore for the day. There’s lots to do here.”

Alix, AB is situated on Highway 12, nestled against the lake. It’s a short drive from Red Deer, an hour and a half from Drumheller, 1 hour and 45 minutes from Edmonton and two hours from Calgary. The town office can be reached at (403) 747-2495, and visitor information is available on the Alix website
