Alberta NDP Leader Nenshi wins seat in one of three byelections

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi has held Edmonton-Strathcona for the New Democrats in one of three provincial byelections.

Unofficial results from Elections Alberta put him well ahead of the nearest competitor, United Conservative Party candidate Darby Crouch.

The NDP was also leading in Edmonton-Ellerslie where the party's candidate, Gurtej Singh Brar was ahead of United Conservative Party candidate Naresh Bhardwaj by over 500 votes with 46 of 55 polls reporting.

Rebels trade 2022 draft pick Steranka to Warriors

Rebels trade Steven Steranka to Moose Jaw for draft pick.

Red Deer Rebels owner, president and general manager Brent Sutter announced Friday (June 20) the club has completed a trade with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Rebels have sent forward Steven Steranka to the Warriors in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft.

Steranka, a native of Regina, Sask., was selected by Red Deer in the seventh round (148th overall) of the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi is looking to finally win a seat in the legislature after a year of sitting on the sidelines.

He's running in one of three provincial byelections today as a candidate in Edmonton-Strathcona, where his predecessor, former premier Rachel Notley, last won 80 per cent of the vote.

Also vying for the Edmonton-Strathcona seat is United Conservative Party candidate Darby Crouch.

École Our Lady of the Rosary School has announced that Grade 2 French Immersion Teacher Kaela Masikewich has been awarded the prestigious Alberta French Educator of the Year Award. The award was presented to Ms. Masikewich in front of her students and colleagues at the conclusion of the school's Christian Leadership Awards ceremony on June 17.

Passage of Bill C-202 brings mixed reviews and concerns over future trade talks

Canada's supply managed sector is breathing a sigh of relief with the passage of Bill C-202 which protects it from any further concessions in future trade talks.

An identical bill died on the order paper in the last session but this time moved quickly through Parliament and the Senate, before receiving Royal Assent last week.

The Dairy Farmers of Canada, Chicken Farmers of Canada, Egg Farmers of Canada, Turkey Farmers of Canada, and the Canadian Hatching Egg Producers issued a joint statement supporting the legislation.

Flooding hits Ponoka downtown after sudden downpour

A sudden and intense rainfall on Friday afternoon briefly flooded the intersection of 50 Street and 51 Avenue in downtown Ponoka. 

The heavy downpour overwhelmed the stormwater system, leaving the intersection temporarily under water.  

“There was some water accumulation at a downtown intersection, but it receded soon after the rain stopped,” said Sandra Smith, Communications Manager for the Town of Ponoka.  

RCMP identify second victim of Banff rockfall as man, 33, from Surrey, B.C.

The second person killed in a rockfall last week in Banff National Park  has been identified as a 33-year-old man from Surrey, B.C. 

RCMP did not provide a name and say no more information will be provided.

Two people were killed and three more injured when a slab of mountain gave way last Thursday, raining rock down on hikers at Bow Glacier Falls.

The three injured were later listed in stable condition.

The second deceased person has previously been identified as 70-year-old Jutta Hinrichs, a retired university professor from Calgary.

Parks Canada says site of fatal rockfall in Banff National Park remains closed

Parks Canada says the site remains closed where a rockfall killed two hikers and injured three more last week in Banff National Park.

Spokeswoman Amy Krause says safety is the agency's top priority and it is considering all options before reopening Bow Glacier Falls.

A slab of mountain broke loose last Thursday afternoon and rained rock down on a popular hiking trail near the falls, about 200 kilometres northwest of Calgary.

One of the two deceased has been identified as 70-year-old Jutta Hinrichs, a retired university professor from Calgary.
