Call for applications for Community Recreation Enhancement Grant

Once again, non-profit groups are invited to apply for funding through The City of Red Deer’s Community Recreation Enhancement Grant. The program provides funding to enhance the delivery of community recreation programs, services and events in Red Deer.

Submissions are received exclusively online. The submission system is quick to set up and easy to use. All applications must be submitted via online portal available at www.reddeer.ca/RecreationGrants.

Alberta surgical company's fees double public costs, according to AHS documents

A private surgical company at the heart of allegations the Alberta government interfered to secure overpriced medical contracts was billing taxpayers more than twice as much per procedure than it would cost in a public hospital, according to Alberta Health Services documents.

An internal chart included in an email sent by the former head of Alberta Health Services to a Health Ministry bureaucrat, obtained by The Canadian Press, indicates estimates for hip replacements in Edmonton at the public health agency's hospitals was just over $4,000 as of last fall.

Rebels fight back late to earn single point against Saskatoon

The Red Deer Rebels' late comeback against Saskatoon fell short Friday night, as the club lost 3-2 in overtime.

The Rebels scored a pair of late goals to send the game into the extra frame and earn a single point.

The Blades opened the scoring 4:22 into the first when Tanner Scott found the back of the net.

There was no scoring in the second.

Saskatoon would take a 2-0 lead with 7:17 left in the third period.

With Chase Wutzke on the bench, the Rebels were able to get on the board when Ollie Josephson netted his 10th goal of the year.

Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser happening today in Red Deer

The Mustard Seed, in partnership with the Red Deer Food Bank, is once again hosting the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY), a family-friendly winter fundraising walk in support of local charities. 

The event is a family-friendly 2 km or 5 km fundraising walk in support of local charities serving people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness.

Each year in February, tens of thousands of Canadians step outside the warmth and comfort of home to shine a light of welcome and compassion in their communities.

Red Deer RCMP warn public about the dangers of ‘swatting’

Red Deer RCMP are raising awareness regarding a concerning issue of false reports to police.

Recently, Red Deer RCMP have received several fabricated calls reporting false emergencies. This dangerous practice is sometimes known as ‘swatting’, and involves the caller falsely reporting a violent crime, such as a hostage situation or active shooter, to trigger an immediate and high-risk police response. The term ‘swatting’ is in reference to a police response that may require a ‘swat team.’

Bowden mayor says controversial billboard has 'nothing to do with the town'

A large highway billboard that recently went up along the QEII east of Bowden is creating quite a stir for the Central Alberta community.

The billboard from AmericaFund.ca urges Albertans to lobby Premier Danielle Smith to help make Canada the 51st state and join the United States of America. It features a photo of Smith beside U.S. President Donald Trump that was taken during Smith's visit to Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in mid-January.

To the displeasure of many Canadians, Trump has continued his push in recent weeks to see Canada become the 51st state.

Over 20,000 patients seen through Sylvan Lake's Advanced Ambulatory Care Service in 2024

The volunteer-based Sylvan Lake & Area Urgent Care Committee has released its 2024 Report to the Community.

The mission of the committee is to raise funds to purchase medical equipment and services for the Advanced Ambulatory Care Service (AACS).

Since opening in 2018, Sylvan Lake’s AACS has offered diagnosis and treatment of urgent but non-life-threatening conditions.

Red Deer Curling Centre celebrating 125 years with bonspiel

The Red Deer Curling Centre is celebrating its 125th anniversary this weekend (Feb. 21-22) with a bonspiel and social at the Pidherney Centre.

The Curling Centre is the largest club in Alberta with over 900 members.

The first curling games in Red Deer were played on the ice of the Red Deer River. In 1898, matches were moved to a small outdoor rink on Morrison (52nd) Street.

Ponoka Pool Sharks hosting swim meet; Aquaplex closed to public starting Fri night

Regular scheduled swim times at the Ponoka Aquaplex will be temporarily paused starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21 and will remain paused for Saturday, Feb. 22 and Sunday, February 23 for the Ponoka Pool Sharks Swim Meet. 

The public is welcome to come and cheer the swimmers on during the meet.

Regular scheduled swim times will resume on Monday, Feb. 24.

The former head of the Alberta Medical Association says Premier Danielle Smith's latest finger pointing at the province's front-line health agency has created a "draconian" chill among workers.

Dr. Paul Parks, an emergency physician, says he's heard from scores of health workers across Alberta who felt intimidated by the premier's harsh critique this week of Alberta Health Services.
