Siksika Nation and the surrounding Wheatland County area are experiencing smoky haze, prompting health advisories.

Siksika Health Services issued an advisory on Tuesday (Sept. 2), recommending that Nation residents exercise caution while outdoors.

Residents in the affected area are advised to avoid using fans and ventilation systems that bring smoky air indoors. Health officials also recommend turning down thermostats and furnace fans, and avoiding the use of fireplaces, wood stoves, or candles.

Individuals affected by the smoke may experience symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, headaches, and irritation of the eyes, throat, and nose. Seniors, children, and people with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions are especially vulnerable and should be monitored closely.

Siksika Health Services reminds residents that anyone experiencing smoke-related symptoms can call Health Link at 811 for healthcare assistance.
