Later this month, about 120 km southwest of Weyburn in the town of Bengough, destruction lovers and their cars will hit the track for the 2nd annual Bengough Brawl on September 20th. The Demolition Derby is put on by Palmer Automotive and the Palmer family in conjunction with the Southeast Demolition Club and numerous donations from the community. A demolition derby bringing a variety of cars and competitors will take over the Bengough Ag Society Fairgrounds for the chance at glory and cash prizes. Colton Dodd, organizer of the Bengough Brawl, explains the fun that’ll take place.

“The Bengough Brawl is on September 20th in Bengough, Saskatchewan at the Bengough Ag Society Fairgrounds. We are doing the Demolition Derby and then we're doing a motorized barrel racing with quads and dirt bikes. There will also be a Power Wheels Derby for kids (aged) four to ten and the motorized barrel racing is for anyone 12 and older. Demolition Derby is for 16 and older.”

Admission is $10 for those aged 13 or older, $5 for children aged 6-12 and free for those aged five and under. For those driving in the demolition derby, the cost is $150 for the driver and $20 for each member of the pit crew. Also, there is a car raffle taking place for a 1976 Chrysler New Yorker, a premier demolition car with the winner being able to drive it in the final match for the $2000 first prize. Second place will take home $1400, and third place will receive $1000. Tickets for the raffle are $20 for one or $50 for 3.

This event is the second annual Bengough Brawl to take place and is already drawing in competitors from as far as Montana and Manitoba, as the inaugural last year drew quite the crowd. Dodd says they took what made them successful last year and translated it to this one, and also improved on a few things, such as more kid-friendly events.

“This is our second year. Last year was our first year and for our first year we had about 9 cars attend. This year we're looking at probably about 15 cars. I've had people from Montana and Manitoba say they're coming, so it should be a really good turnout for our second year. We're kind of just in the starting phase. So with each year, we're hoping to get a little better. Biggest problem (last year), we had way too many kids kind of running around. So, this year we've separated the ring better from the pits and then we added the other events such as motorized barrel racing and the Power Wheels Derby so that the kids kind of have something more to do. You know, kind of keep more of a family event instead of just the one main event. We do have a beer gardens and food truck. There'll be food and everything.”

Registration for any of the events is open until the day of the event and the more the merrier. For more information about the Bengough Brawl including rules and registration details, visit their Bengough Brawl - Bengough Demolition Derby Club Facebook page.
