Two head-to-head matchups and a singular exhibition game highlighted the Hockey Saskatchewan Sask First female U16 Top 40 showcase tournament put on this past weekend in Swift Current.
Six local players were in attendance out of the 40 players making up two teams: Team White rostering Kindersley's Iralyn Calkins, and two Rosetown natives Harper Kampen, and Jalaa Moore Jagow, while Team Green included Kerrobert's Berkley Wuttunee, Kindersley's Hayden Hilbig, and Rosetown's Charleigh Johnston.
Friday's opening day of competition pitted the two sides against each other in the first of three games for each team, Calkins, Kampen, Moore Jagow and Team White coming out on top with a 4-1 win over Team Green.
Saturday featured exhibition games as Team Green played the Pilot Mound Buffaloes and won big 11-0. After that game it was Team White taking the ice against the Regina Rebels for a grind-it-out game resulting in a 1-1 tie.
With Saturday's results in the books the teams arrived back at the rink on Sunday morning to close out the showcase with another head-to-head, and it was Wuttunee, Hilbig, Johnston and Team Green taking the 6-3 win to make up for Friday's three goal defeat.
The Sask First tournament marked the end of a long process for the players that began with regional camps, the showcase sending each player back to their club season with confidence after a summer of high-level competition. Calkins, Hilbig, and Moore Jagow are entering their first season of U18 AAA with the Swift Current Wildcats, while Johnston and Wuttunee are on the roster for the Battlefords Sharks for the upcoming season.
The Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League regular season starts in the final week of September.
