A new state-of-the-art transit garage is slated for construction in northwest Winnipeg.
City officials broke ground on the $200-million project Wednesday afternoon.
"Public transit is the lifeline of our cities, connecting people, reducing congestion, and shaping a sustainable future where every journey matters," said Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard. "This new garage is an important step in the upgrades needed to improve the infrastructure required to ensure every Winnipegger has timely access to safe and accessible transit."

The Oak Point Garage, located at Selkirk Avenue and Oak Point Highway, will replace the aging North Garage, currently at 1520 Main St.
"Oak Point Garage is critical to the growth and success of Winnipeg Transit," said Mayor Scott Gillingham. "By building this state-of-the-art garage, we can add more 60-foot buses to the fleet and keep improving transit for riders across Winnipeg."

The 259,000 sq. ft garage will have a maximum storage capacity of 171 forty-foot buses and will have the capacity to house and maintain articulated and zero-emission buses. The only other garage with that ability is the Brandon Garage, located at 600 Brandon Ave in South Osborne.
Oak Point Garage will also have electrical chargers and dispensers for 24 battery-electric buses.
Tri-level funding for this project is through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
Construction of the Oak Point Garage will be completed in 2027.
