The Rosetown Royals senior football team should have a nice crowd for their home opener on Friday against Maple Creek.
Rosetown Central High School students will get out of class early for the 2:00 PM kickoff, meeting a busload of students from down road in Elrose, and also local elementary school kids who will make the trek over from Walter Aseltine School.
Royals head coach, and RCHS teacher Mitch Wintonyk looks forward to the game every year.
"It's a good, fun time for our kids. They really look forward to it."
Hundreds of students could flood the field between the two Rosetown schools and their friends to the south.
"We have that co-op with Elrose... It's a ton of fun to get all the schools for the first half, and then usually the elementary school takes off to catch the buses."
It will be the Royals second game of the season after Rosetown started their season last week with a 60-36 win in Eatonia.
Wintonyk liked what he saw out of his teams run game, as like any good football team, the Royals identity starts at the line of scrimmage.
"Offensive line is probably the strength of our team. They get after it pretty good, we really preach blocking with an intensity and purpose here, and they have really bought into that. As they go, our offense goes, and it's no secret we like to run the ball, so it makes it easier when the o-line blocks the way they do," finished Wintonyk before switching to the defensive side of the ball, saying this year's group is a young, fast unit that is capable of using speed to their advantage.
After one week of play the Royals are tied with the Unity Warriors at the top of the 2A 6-aside standings. The Warriors will be on the road in Eatonia on Thursday for Week 2 before Rosetown hosts Maple Creek on Friday in the other game.
