Maple Leaf Construction began their current paving work this week in Portage la Prairie, starting with 6th Avenue North. That section was expected to wrap up Wednesday, with crews scheduled to move to Lorne Avenue Thursday (today). Work there is expected to take about the entire day
“They will move out to Elm Street to finish up the paving there and then over to Crescent Road. So ideally they’ll be done paving this week,” notes Matt Phillips, manager of engineering with the City of Portage la Prairie.
He says if poor weather or unexpected delays occur, the final paving will continue into early next week, likely finishing Monday or Tuesday.
Final touches next week
Phillips says once the mainline paving is complete, a smaller crew will return to handle the details.
“You’ll see a smaller paving crew come into town to do all the driveways, curbing, and intersection approaches,” says Phillips.
He adds that the finishing work should take place throughout next week.

Appreciation for patience
Phillips adds the city appreciates residents’ cooperation during the lengthy closures. He explains that more repairs were needed than originally expected once crews began work.
“We didn’t intend to have all these streets closed this long, but when we got started construction on them, there needed to be more repairs made than originally thought,” explains Phillips.
He continues that some sections required full-depth asphalt repairs, which extended timelines but will ensure stronger results. Phillips thanks the community for its patience and says the work should soon be complete, allowing residents to return to their normal routes.
