The Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) has a new chief at the helm, and it’s a familiar face. After serving in the role on an interim basis since January, Jason Colon has officially been appointed Chief of Police.
Colon, who brings more than 27 years of policing experience, says he’s ready to guide the service into its next chapter.
“As I begin my role as Chief of Police, I am dedicated to promoting modern, community-based policing focused on compassion and cultural awareness,” he says. “Together with our team and partners, we will address public safety needs and support First Nations communities across Manitoba.”
Colon has worn many hats over the years, from frontline officer to senior leadership, working with the Blood Tribe Police Service, Dakota Ojibway Police Service, and Winnipeg Police Service. He stepped into the interim role earlier this year after the sudden passing of the late Chief Doug Palson.
The Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council Police Commission notes Colon’s ability to provide steady leadership during a time of transition, calling him a leader who balances accountability with compassion.
His education includes a Master's in Executive Police Leadership and a Bachelor of Policing from Charles Sturt University. He also has specialized training from the Canadian Police College, Edmonton Police Service, and Dalhousie University, and contributes his expertise to provincial and national policing committees.
While the announcement looks forward, it also carries a note of remembrance. The MFNPS and Commission honoured former Chief Palson, whose legacy of humility and dedication set a lasting standard for policing in First Nations communities.
Colon says he’s committed to honouring that legacy while also advancing a vision for modern policing that supports healing, growth, and empowerment.
