The Weyburn Red Wings wrapped up their preseason schedule Wednesday night, falling 5-1 to the Estevan Bruins at Affinity Place. The loss had the Red Wings close out the preseason with a record of 2-2.
Estevan established an early lead, scoring three goals in the first period. Noah Asmundson opened the scoring on a power play at 2:40, followed by goals from Gunner Moore at 7:47 and Parker Seymour with 7:15 to play in the frame.
After a scoreless second period, the Red Wings got on the board in the third.
Josh Sale scored Weyburn's only goal at 3:49, with assists from Drew Molde and Luke Schraeder.
The Bruins would add two more goals to seal the victory. Asmundson scored his second of the night on a power play at 8:54, and Cash Olson added an empty-net goal with 4:59 to go.
The Red Wings found themselves with nine power play opportunities in the game but were unable to capitalize on them. At the other end, Estevan went 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
The Red Wings outshot the Bruins 37-27. Goalie Preston Patenaude made 22 saves for Weyburn. Estevan's goaltender, Dylan Adams, stopped 36 of the 37 shots he faced.
Over the course of the next nine days, the Red Wings will prepare for their home opener, when they host the Yorkton Terriers at the Whitecap Resources Centre. Ahead of the game, though, there will still be some Red Wing action taking place at the arena.
Former players from throughout the years will be taking to the ice for an alumni game Friday night. There is no admission fee for the game, which will feature players from throughout the history of the team. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
