If there’s one thing Winnipeggers love, it’s a good deal, and this weekend promises the ultimate one.

On September 13 and 14, the city will host its annual Fall Giveaway Weekend, an opportunity for people to dispose of unwanted items and for treasure seekers to make a great find.

"Our hope for Giveaway Weekend is to keep as many unwanted items as possible out of the landfill while giving residents the chance to participate in a great community event," said Ross Eadie, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Water and Waste, and Environment. "I encourage residents to consider whether their unwanted items could be given a second life with someone who might need it."

There are a variety of items that the city encourages Winnipeggers to put out, including books, CDs, DVDs, kitchen gadgets, dishes, cutlery, pots, and pans.

However, some things should be avoided, including items that could be unsafe, items infested with bed bugs (e.g., mattresses, furniture, and bedding) and toilets (with a flush volume of 13 litres or more).

Anyone interested in participating in the fall giveaway weekend is asked to place their unwanted items on the curb with a FREE sticker or sign on it. All leftover items must be removed by dusk on Sunday.

For those seeking treasures, the city asks that you not walk or drive on private lawns or gardens, obey traffic laws at all times and take only the items at the curb marked "FREE."

The next curbside giveaway weekend will take place in spring 2026.
