Portage la Prairie Mayor Sharilyn Knox says the former Bokhari development on Park Avenue near the local Walmart is now in new hands and moving forward. She explains that while the city is not directly involved, the sale brings confidence to council. The new purchaser has a strong reputation, and planning staff are encouraged by the progress being made.

“We’re very pleased that that project development has sold and that the plans from the developer are to get things on the market,” notes Knox.

The mayor adds that council is looking forward to seeing the first residents move into the building once it is completed.

Mall future remains uncertain

While housing developments are advancing, the future of the Portage Mall is less clear. Knox says the mall remains for sale and the city’s economic development office continues to provide information to potential buyers.

“Our economic development office works on that file to try and help redevelop the mall the best way they can,” says Knox.

She continues that council is hopeful the property will eventually attract a new owner committed to redevelopment.

Demand for housing options

Knox says there is strong activity in housing across the city, with new projects ranging from duplexes and fourplexes to single-family homes and apartment buildings. She stresses the importance of planning for a variety of housing types to meet the needs of families and individuals.

“We have to make sure that we’re looking ahead to having housing for everyone,” adds Knox.

She continues that projects like those on Park Avenue illustrate the growing demand for apartment living in Portage la Prairie.

Potential near the new hospital

The mayor also addresses discussions with Dakota Tipi First Nation and other developers interested in property near the new Portage District General Hospital. She explains that the land beside the hospital belongs to the city, and requests for proposals will be issued to developers in the future.

“We talked to Dakota Tipi on a regular, building those relationships,” says Knox.

Knox adds that the location beside the hospital is considered prime by many developers, though no projects have yet been approved or started.

New hospital on schedule

The new hospital itself is currently being built by PCL Construction before operations shift to Southern Health near the end of the year, with rumours PCL will pull out with their work completed perhaps more early than expected.

Knox says the project remains on track and on time.

“From what I hear, it is on schedule, on time. So we’re very excited that, you know, time flies and we’re talking 2026,” notes Knox.

She adds that by this time next year, the hospital is expected to be welcoming patients, families, and healthcare workers, marking a major step forward for the region’s health services.
