With just over a month to municipal election day, Councillor Melissa Langmaid has announced her re-election bid.
Langmaid was elected to the council in 2021, getting the second-highest number of votes.
"I am running for re-election because I love this community, and I love working to make it a better place. Serving on council has been an immense privilege, and it's a challenge that I've been excited to take on for the past four years," explained Langmaid.
Since being elected, Langmaid has focused on governing as a team with other council members.
"It's the work we do together that benefits the community. There's no single councillor who can govern alone. As part of that system, as part of that democratic system, I've been proud to represent a people-centred perspective and council debates and discussions, focused not only on the bottom line, but also on the well-being and quality of life of our residents," said Langmaid.
Some of the things she has been proud of over the past four years are the relationship the town has built with Siksika Nation and the partnership with the Kristian Ayoungman Foundation.
Langmaid has also dedicated her time on council to serving on the local library board, the Marigold Library System, the FCSS Advisory Committee, and the Culture and Well-being Task Force.
She wants to be returned to another term to continue the work that needs to be done, having gained the experience she needed during the first term.
"I've attended seminars and participated in training courses through the Elected Officials Education Program so that I can better myself as a councillor and better represent the people of Strathmore," added Langmaid.
"Not only represent the community's values on council, but I can now back that up with experience and knowledge that I've worked to gain throughout this last term."
If re-elected, Langmaid has two main priorities she wants to complete by the end of the term: the municipal development plan and the land use by-law.
"They both desperately need revision, and they're really important documents that are going to help guide the growth that Strathmore's anticipating," Langmaid said.
She also wants to put more investment in protecting the small-town charm of Strathmore by improving culture and wellness in the community.
"I have a focus on improving access to medical services in Strathmore, particularly in attracting additional family doctors into town. That's something that is a basic level of wellness that everyone deserves to have," explained Langmaid.
