As summer wraps up, staff at the Portage Youth Hub are shifting programming to meet the schedules of students back in school.

Peer coach Randy Lilley says the hub is marking its first anniversary this fall and continues to adapt to what young people need. He explains that staff spend time talking with youth about what worked in the summer, what to keep going, and how to add more support as the new season begins.

“We want to continue communicating with the kids and finding out what they like and what we can do for them, how we can support them and keep things fun, but also help them get some stuff done that maybe they need help with, whether that’s in some cases getting ID, getting set up for courses, or in some cases, tutoring,” notes Lilley.

Workshops and drop-in options

Wellness coach Malavika Monesh says the fall schedule is full, with programs ranging from fitness to financial skills. She points to weekly cooking classes, yoga, and art sessions, along with a new workshop called Milkshakes and Money Choices.

“We had a financial workshop, which is called Milkshakes and Money Choices, and I’m the one actually facilitating it with my co-worker, Hope,” says Monesh.

She adds that the session is designed to help youth understand the difference between needs and wants, while also learning how to prioritize bills — all while enjoying a milkshake.

Wide range of support

Lilley says the variety of programming reflects the wide age range of youth who attend, from 12 to 29. He explains that the hub works with multiple community partners to provide both practical skills and creative outlets.

“That’s the beautiful thing about the Youth Hub programming,” adds Lilley.

He continues that financial sessions run by Monesh have already proven popular, with strong feedback from staff and youth alike.

How to get involved

Monesh says most programs are drop-in, but some require registration. Information is posted on social media at Portage Youth Hub, through the PCRC website, and on the PortageOnline events page.

“If you’re not sure about our working hours, we will be at the hub from Tuesday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturday, we will be there 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.,” continues Monesh.

The Youth Hub is located at 1200 Saskatchewan Avenue West, across from Fort La Reine School and near 7-Eleven.
