Calli Leckie is settling into her new role as student council president at MacGregor Collegiate Institute, and she’s already making moves to boost school spirit and student engagement.
“It’s been a pretty exciting week. Lots of new stuff around the school. It’s been going good.”
The council has held two meetings so far; one ahead of the Grade 9 students’ first day, and another on the first Monday of the school year to begin planning the year’s events.
“We’ve got a great group of girls,” Leckie notes. “We’re all pretty close and talk outside of student council, too. It’s nice to have a group that works really well together.”
One of the council’s first initiatives was a welcome barbecue and scavenger hunt, dubbed the “Goose Chase," for Grade 9 students. Leckie said she was only able to attend the beginning of the event, but heard positive feedback.
“There was a lot of participation, and it looked like everyone had fun."
Leckie said stepping into the presidency has revealed just how much work goes on behind the scenes.
“it's definitely a lot of work, which I knew it was going to be, but it's really interesting to see how much actually you have to do. I wasn't aware of all these things that our past president was doing when I was not as involved as student council, so it's really interesting. I get to make the agendas and I get to make a whole bunch of decisions, and I didn't know I would get to do that, so it's pretty exciting.”
Among her priorities this year are reviving intramural sports and organizing more school-wide events.
“We’re trying to get some life back into the school. School spirit hasn’t been the highest lately, but we’re working on that with fun little events that everyone can enjoy.”
Leckie saYS she’s optimistic about the year ahead and hopes to see more students getting involved.
