Rocky View County council voted against building a data centre campus in the county.
The vote was made at a special council meeting on Sept. 9, with the vote ending 6-1 opposed to the centre.
"This decision was primarily based on concerns about the proposed location and its potential impact on local agricultural producers," wrote the county on its website. "Without approval of the Area Structure Plan (ASP), development of the proposed data centre and technology park cannot proceed."
The proposed Kineticor ASP would have led to the campus being built upon 1,107 acres of land in the county's northeast quadrant.
"The plan area is anticipated to accommodate multiple data centre facilities with accompanying stormwater management facilities, and the potential for on-site natural gas power generation," added the county.
The council meeting involved a public hearing which lasted over 10 hours as over 50 people took to the stand to voice their opposition to the project. Only four stood up to speak in favour.
A concern among citizens was the potential water consumption, as the data centre campus would have taken potable water from the county's water treatement plant.
Reeve Crystal Kissel thanked the residents who came forward to share their views at the public hearing.
