Renovations at the Ron Ebbesen Arena are progressing with the hockey season getting underway.

Brad Anderson,  the manager of recreation with the City of Airdrie, shared that everything is still on schedule to be completed on time.

"The construction started in the spring, and we're on time with our original schedule to have Ron Ebensen Arena open again by mid-October."

He explained that the reason why renovations are being done is because of the age of the facility.

"That facility being over 30 years old, it was time to redo a number of the amenities or the assets within the facility."

According to the City of Airdrie website, here is a list of upgrades being done:

  • Ice pads, refrigeration system and condenser
    • Replacing ice pads to incorporate a more efficient and less corrosive glycol system and address freezing issues.
  • Arena boards
    • Maintenance replacement of the original board system.
  • Spectator stands
    • Replacement of original wooden board materials while incorporating accessibility standards.
  • Washrooms
    • Update and retrofit the original lobby and lounge washrooms to accessibility standards.
  • Lobby dry pad mini-rink
    • Installation of a mini dry pad rink in the lobby to provide a safe, spontaneous use activity zone for spectators and those finishing or waiting to start. their games
  • Lobby and arena flooring
    • Upgrade flooring surface materials to allow patrons to put their skates on in the lobby.
  • Lounge flooring
    • Upgrade lounge flooring to a hard surface material.

"I think what's important is that we're able to get another 30 years of life out of this asset. As a resident, I'm excited that we're able to do that."

He knows that ice times are a hot commodity in Airdrie and believes these upgrades will make time spent at the arena more enjoyable.

"We're excited to welcome Airdrie back as soon as all the work is undertaken and completed."

The city states that the renovations are being partially funded through the Canada Community-Building Fund, which is supported by both the federal and provincial governments. Rocky View County also contributed through the Recreation Services Cost Sharing Agreement.
