Police say a cyclist is dead after a collision in southwest Calgary on Friday afternoon.

The Calgary Police Service said its Traffic Section is investigating after officers were called at about 3:40 p.m. to the intersection of 17 Avenue S.W. and 101 Street S.W.

Police said it is believed a 2006 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, driven by a man in his 70s, was making a left turn from eastbound 17 Avenue S.W. onto northbound 101 Street S.W.

At the same time, a male cyclist in his 40s, riding an e-bicycle, began to ride across 101 Street S.W. in the marked crosswalk when he was struck by the Land Rover.

Police said the cyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Land Rover was not injured and remained at the scene.

Police said alcohol, drugs and excessive speed are not believed to be factors in the collision.
