Environment Canada has issued multiple tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm advisories across southern Manitoba Sunday evening as a powerful storm system tracks through the region.
Meteorologists say some of the thunderstorms are capable of producing tornadoes, along with damaging winds, large hail and intense rainfall.
Warnings have shifted through several communities over the evening, including Brenda-Waskada, Grassland and Victoria, with advisories continuing to change as the storm moves east and north.
"This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation," Environment Canada said in one of its warnings.
In addition to tornado alerts, severe thunderstorm warnings and watches remain in place for a wide swath of southern Manitoba. Areas affected include Brandon, Souris, Virden, Killarney, Pilot Mound, Portage la Prairie, Carman, Morden, Winkler and Altona.
Residents in areas under a warning are urged to take shelter immediately. The agency recommends moving to a basement or small, windowless room in a sturdy building. Those in mobile homes, tents or vehicles should seek stronger shelter.
Environment Canada continues to update warnings as the storm evolves.
