The Legion Cavaliers are a motorcycle club run by members of the Royal Canadian Legion - and they just opened their first branch in Alberta.

The new branch, based out of the Royal Canadian Legion Strathmore-Branch 10, held its first-ever motorcycle show in the Legion parking lot on Saturday (Sept. 13).

Don Callan, padre of the club and chaplain at the Strathmore Legion, says the Alberta branch of the Cavaliers is relatively new.

"There are nomads that are part of this organization but don't have a home base, so being the first chapter of the Cavalier riders in Alberta, we're looking to change a few rules," said Callan.

One must be a Legion member to join the Cavaliers, with their vests displaying what branch they belong to and whether they're a veteran, standard member, or associate member.

"That way, everything is completely above board and we don't offend veterans or non-veterans," added Callan, speaking of the concerns behind stolen valour.

The Cavaliers are hoping that their annual motorcycle show will encourage other local bike enthusiasts to join their ranks, as the bike shows are open for all residents, not just members of the bike club.

"There's a bit less of a turnout than we hoped for, but we do have 14 bikes that are registered," said Callan. "We're hoping to grow and have more people look at the Legion and be involved."
