The Southwest Daycare and Early Learning Centre cut the ribbon Friday for the grand reopening of its location on Fourth Avenue Southwest.
The Raising the Roof fundraising campaign was launched in March 2023 with a goal of raising $200,000 for renovations.
Initially, the daycare planned to patch a few ceiling panels. However, the costs and complexity of the project grew after staff discovered structural issues with the roof and sewer problems that needed to be addressed.
“Because it’s an old building, one thing led to another, and a small renovation patch-up project turned into a major renovation project,” said Stephanie Ramsey, chair of the Southwest Daycare board of directors.
A variety of fundraisers were held between March 2023 and December 2024, including rib nights and special-order fundraisers, to raise enough money to complete the work.
“We were very lucky to have many people who donated to us, came back from having their children here years ago and donated again, and community members really rallied together,” said assistant director Taylor Brake.
“We put in countless hours knocking on doors, hosting events and just getting our message out there.”
All the fundraising paid off, as the daycare was able to officially reopen its fully renovated location.
Executive director Lucille Gilliland said the reopening was a long time coming.
“It’s wonderful, so exciting. We’ve been waiting a long time to do it, and it’s just amazing how everybody’s come together and been a team, from the people who have financially supported us to our amazing board of directors and our family and staff. It’s amazing to be back home,” Gilliland said.
As one of the oldest daycare centres in Moose Jaw, the Southwest Daycare and Early Learning Centre has been in operation since 1975 and also celebrated its 50th anniversary at the reopening.
At full capacity, the daycare can accommodate 54 children between the ages of 18 months and 12 years, with 25 per cent of enrolment dedicated to children with special needs and medical issues.
