The late 1970s leading into 1980 went a time of incredible turmoil for people as South Vietnam as a violent and costly guerrilla war tore through the country and laid waste to much of the landscape. At this time, North American church and community agencies were supporting the settlement of waves of refugees at the end of the war.

The Humboldt and District Museum highlights the story in their new exhibit Hearts of Freedom: Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees. At the heart of the local story are well-known Humboldt residents and restauranteurs Nha and Dan Tran who originally arrive to the area in Watson. The Trans have been serving up traditional food since the 1980’s at their landmark restaurant in Humboldt.

Join Museum staff and patrons at the opening reception on Wednesday, September 24 at 7pm. Curator Dr. Stephanie Stobbe will be joining us via Zoom.
