A newly designed outdoor basketball court has opened at a Winnipeg high school.

Over the weekend, the Winnipeg School Division, together with Buckets & Borders, the Winnipeg Sea Bears and WarriorZ Basketball, opened up a newly revitalized court at RB Russell Vocational High School that features a powerful mural titled “Basketball is Medicine.”

The design was created by Anishinaabe woodlands artist Blake Angeconeb and reflects growth, protection, and healing, symbolizing the power of sport and culture to bring people together.

Angeconeb's first venture into art began six years ago during a fun painting session with his younger niece, which has since launched him into a full-time career as an artist.

"Through this partnership with Buckets & Borders and the Winnipeg Sea Bears, we are investing not just in better facilities, but in deeper connections—between students, staff, families, and neighbours. It’s a powerful opportunity to bring energy, creativity, and pride back into Winnipeg’s inner city," said Matt Henderson, superintendent, Winnipeg School Division.

The bottom court represents the earth, with two guardian spirits and small thunderbirds symbolizing outh. It reflects growth, gathering and connection. Meanwhile, the top court features two large thunderbirds in flight, watching over the land and young people, offering strength and protection.

"The new basketball court at RB Russell will provide our community with a place to gather, connect, and build a sense of belonging," said  Lindsey Munz, principal, RB Russell Vocational High School. "Engaging in sport and recreation provides immediate and long-term benefits for the community, including improved mental, physical, and social health."

The grand opening celebration was held on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025.
