On Sunday, several Airdronians volunteered at the Royal Canadian Legion #288 in Airdrie, preparing it for Remembrance Day.

Volunteers took time to paint red insignias on the sidewalks outside of the Legion, Jason Hoffman, past president of the Legion, explained.

"These are artist-inspired creations, and it's to help raise awareness and beautify our branch."

He explained they have been painting the sidewalks with the insignia for a number of years.

"It's all about remembering our veterans and what they've done for our country."

Hoffman went on to talk about why he has been painting the sidewalk over the past few years.

"It's something I've been passionate about for the last seven years, being a member and on the executive here. It's about giving back, and it's about helping, because without our veterans and our Canadian Forces, we wouldn't have what we have today."

Wendy Leader, who has been involved with the Legion for several years, explained why she volunteers.

"My purpose of volunteering here for this long is for my veterans and their families. I have past relatives, brothers, uncles, and grandfathers who were involved in the Legion."

Shawnee Hoffman, who is a regular volunteer with the Airdrie Legion, has been a part of the insignia painting for the past four years.

"I'm here to help out the veterans and to make the place look pretty and get it ready for November 11."

Airdrie's Remembrance Day ceremony is taking place on November 11 at Genesis Place.

Back in July, the crosswalk in front of the Legion received a makeover. The red-and-white painted crosswalk features a silhouette of a soldier and the phrase Lest We Forget, in a design similar to those first introduced in Cochrane in 2024.
