An alert was issued at 12:25 p.m. today (Monday) from Environment Canada.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for parts of southwestern Manitoba, warning that conditions are favourable for funnel cloud development through this evening.
The statement, issued at 12:21 p.m. CDT on Monday, covers
- the Municipality of North Cypress–Langford, including Neepawa and Carberry;
- the Municipality of North Norfolk, including MacGregor, Sidney, and Austin;
- the Municipality of Norfolk Treherne;
- Rural Municipality of Victoria, including Holland and Cypress River.
Forecasters say an unstable air mass could produce isolated funnel clouds. These features are typically generated by weak rotation beneath rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. While that rotation is usually not a danger near the ground, it can occasionally intensify into a weak landspout tornado.
Environment Canada notes landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage, but they can still be dangerous—strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs, or toss debris short distances. If conditions become more favourable for landspouts, the agency will issue watches and warnings.
Residents are urged to treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. If one develops nearby, be ready to take shelter, as these clouds often appear with little or no warning.
People in affected areas should continue to monitor Environment Canada alerts and forecasts. Severe weather reports can be sent by email to MBstorm@ec.gc.ca, by calling 1-800-239-0484, or by posting on X using #MBStorm.
