The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has completed its review of an officer-involved shooting in the Rural Municipality of North Cypress-Langford and will not be authorizing charges.
The case stems from an incident on May 12, when Carberry RCMP responded to reports of a woman acting erratically and walking in traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway around 9:21 p.m. Police said the woman was told she was under arrest but refused to comply and produced an edged weapon. An officer discharged their firearm, striking her. She was taken to Brandon Regional Health Centre and later transferred to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.
Because the incident involved serious injuries during an arrest, the IIU assumed responsibility under the Police Services Act. Investigators interviewed seven civilian witnesses, the affected person, and two designated officers—one as a subject officer and one as a witness officer.
After reviewing all the evidence, the civilian director determined no charges would be authorized. The IIU says the investigation is now closed.
The woman involved remains before the court on charges arising from the incident. The civilian director’s report will be released once those charges are resolved.
The IIU first announced details of the investigation on May 13.
