Two communities in Southern Alberta received the 2025 Community Naturalization and Tree Planting grant from Fortis Alberta.

The Town of Stavely received funding for the Tree Growth Project, while the Town of Claresholm received funding for the Urban Forest Project.

With grant funding of $2,500, the Town of Claresholm is working to increase the shade canopy and windbreak.

“Drought, disease, and other factors have impacted tree planting in our community,” the town’s website said. “We have implemented new planting practices and protocols to give plantings the best chance of survival in our climate.”

The trees will support wildlife, prevent soil erosion, and conserve water, in addition to cooling spaces, enhancing aesthetics, and contributing to sustainability and a sense of community.

The grant can be used to plant flower beds, create shared vegetable gardens, or in other creative ways.

“Building strong communities is essential to creating a sustainable future for all Albertans, and environmental efforts are an important part of that vision,” the Fortis Alberta website said.
