It was a big day on the greens for MacGregor Collegiate Institute’s own Hailey Terrick, who walked away with the top spot at the Zone 7 Female High School Golf Championship on Friday. The Grade 9 student impressed not only with her skill but also with her calm approach to the game, despite only recently picking up the sport.

“It was a lot of fun,” Terrick says of her win. “It was a great experience, and I’d do it again for sure.”

Around 30 girls competed in the tournament, playing 18 holes after a shotgun start that saw golfers spread across the course to begin at the same time. Terrick admitted she was one of the younger competitors in the field, but she didn’t let that shake her confidence.

“This was only my second golf tournament experience, so there were a lot of nerves going into it,” she explains. “I just remembered to stay calm and focus on my shots. I’m very fortunate with the way it turned out.”

Terrick’s journey with golf began just over a year ago, when she decided to trade in her softball glove for a set of clubs. Since then, she’s been out on the course nearly five times a week, steadily growing her love for the sport.

MCI principal Kyle McKinstry says Terrick’s success comes as no surprise.

“Hailey’s one of our most kind and polite young ladies here at the school. She’s very humble and found it difficult to speak about her success. That’s the kind of young lady that we have here.”

Though MCI didn’t have enough players to field a full girls’ team, Terrick and her sister still represented the school proudly. Now, she’s setting her sights on the Provincial Golf Championship coming up this Friday at Oak Island Resort & Golf.

For Terrick, the chance to represent her school and community on the provincial stage is just as rewarding as the win itself.

“I was very excited going into the tournament. Being able to represent my school and my community was a great time.”
