The best arms will be battling it out for arm wrestling supremacy this weekend as the Saskatchewan Arm Wrestling Association is hosting the Lock Up at The Legion on Saturday, September 20th. The second annual Armwrestling tournament is taking place at the Weyburn Legion, as co-organizer Micheal Gass says last year was great but hope this year can be even better.
“Yeah, last year's it was called Arm Wars, and this one is (the) Lock Up at The Legion. So, anyone under 18, it'll be free for them to come and then adults, it’s $30 an arm. Then, we got food and drinks there and you come and have a bite and eat some good food.”
Free to attend for spectators, the competition is split up into weight classes with the men’s side having 70, 80, 90, 100, and 100+ kg classes. The women’s side has under and over 100 kg classes and kids will be based on entries. The action will get underway at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday but for those looking to participate, registration and weigh-ins run from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
This is the second annual Armwrestling event that’s been held at the Legion, as last years was the first in almost 20 years. Gass said they’ve had growing interest over that time, with Estevan hosting a tournament and wanted to bring it back to the Opportunity City.
“Last year was our first one and with our research that we've done around town, there hasn't been an event in Weyburn for almost 20 years. They do host one in Estevan every year. They call that one actually Armageddon. That was actually the first tournament I've ever been to, that one there but that was a good turnout there. But yeah, for Weyburn, this is kind of the only thing it's got going on for the arm wrestling. So, we're hoping it gets bigger, and more people get involved and turn it into something big.”
So far, so good for the arm wrestlers as Gass mentions that they’ve noticed an uptick in interest from both competitors as well as attenders. Last year, they had roughly 75 entries with a combination of both left and right arms. A better-than-expected turnout than anticipated for an event that hasn’t been held in nearly two decades.
