A man facing several firearm and child pornography charges made an appearance in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Wednesday with a new lawyer.
Shealagh Mooney from Legal Aid’s south east office appeared via telephone as the man’s legal representative. There is a publication ban on any information that may identify the victim(s). Because the relationship between the man and the victim(s) is unknown at this time, his name will not be published.
Mooney told the court this was her first appearance as the man’s counsel and needed more time to go over the disclosure, or the evidence against the man, and get up to speed on the case.
The case was adjourned to Oct. 6 in Moose Jaw Provincial Court.
According to police, the man was arrested after a search warrant was executed in February as part of a firearms investigation. Property seized by the police included several electronic devices.
The man was released from custody on conditions but allegedly failed to attend court. He was arrested in July on a warrant.
Police searched the electronic devices seized and found child pornography and a separate investigation was opened with the assistance of the Internet Child Exploitation Unit.
The man is facing the following charges:
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Assault with a weapon
- Failure to attend court
- Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is prohibited
- Careless use of a firearm
- Possession of a weapon contrary to an order
- Breach of an undertaking
- Making child pornography
- Sexual interference
- Invitation to sexual touching
- Sexual assault
- Accessing child pornography
- Possession of child pornography
- Arranging to commit an offence against a child under 18
- Arranging to commit an offence against a child under 16
- Luring a child
