The annual Airdrie Food Bank City-wide Food Drive is returning to the city tomorrow.
Christine Arsenault, Marketing and Communications Manager for the food bank, spoke to DiscoverAirdrie about the event and why it is important for them.
"This is our largest food drive of the year, and this helps us get to Christmas, and the holiday time where donations are larger, and then helps us extend through to the spring, when our donations are a little bit lower, that time of year."
She explained that residents from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been dropping off bags on doorsteps with the hope that Airdonians who are able will fill them with food.
"Please, just non-perishable food items. We've had perishables donated before, and some of those bags of groceries don't get looked through for a few weeks."
According to the food bank, please have your bags out by 10 a.m. tomorrow. If they’re not picked up by 1 p.m., call the number on the tag. If you only receive a door hanger, please use any reusable bag.
If you did not receive a door hanger or bag, please feel free to drop a donation off at the food bank or any food bank bin around Airdrie.
According to the food bank, some of the most needed items include:
- Beans & legumes
- Boxed cereal (hot & cold)
- Canned fruits & vegetables
- Dry pasta, rice, pancake mix
- Peanut butter, jam & honey
- Shelf-stable milk & alternatives
- School snacks (peanut-free)
- Baby supplies
Arsenault also shared that they receive around 40,000 pounds of food when they do this food drive.
"Every little bit really does help and adds up to us being able to feed our community."
The food bank is feeding 700-800 families each week.

Just this past weekend was the food bank's Empty Bowls Art Festival. It celebrated Airdrie and the ideals that so many residents hold near and dear to their hearts: residents helping residents, celebrating local artists, businesses, and talent, and, most of all, celebrating each other.
