PMH hosts Family Medicine Residents Retreat

News Release - Prairie Mountain Health

Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) is hosting the University of Manitoba’s Family Medicine Resident Retreat, which takes place in Brandon this weekend from September 19-21.

Family Medicine residents gather annually for education, networking, social activities and learn more about potential employment opportunities. The weekend retreat features a ‘job fair’ on Friday evening, where Regional Health Authorities (RHAs), medical clinics, community recruitment committees, and other support businesses throughout the province are able to showcase employment and lifestyle opportunities for physicians to consider once they complete their education.

PMH CEO Treena Slate says the health region, which last hosted the event in 2022 is looking forward to welcoming participants and showcasing the region’s ‘good nature’.

This year's event: Rural Medicine – Endless Horizons

“The event theme this year, Rural Medicine – Endless Horizons, reflects both the professional and personal possibilities that come with living and working in rural communities. From diverse practice opportunities to rewarding team-based care, and from open landscapes to welcoming communities, the horizons are truly endless. As participants, we will expand on what many already know: we have great facilities, excellent communities, and rural beauty. It almost sells itself!”

PMH Chief Medical Officer Dr. Adrian Fung says the physician recruitment and retention team will be in attendance at the job fair, ready to connect with participants.

“PMH is fortunate and appreciative to have many local physicians and community members assisting over the weekend. We’ll meet and discuss opportunities with residents and their spouses. We’ll make a point of following up on conversations about practice options, such as within Emergency Departments, Health Centres, the Brandon Minor Injury and Illness Clinic, and specialty practices of family medicine. We have a lot to offer,” Dr. Fung stated.

PMH anticipates there will be 128 family medicine residents from all of the programs in Manitoba.

The weekend will also feature group/ family activities planned by the chief residents and their committee, as well as a Saturday night dinner sponsored by PMH.

PMH thanks event sponsors, which include: The communities of Deloraine-Winchester, Glenboro, Grandview, Hamiota, Killarney, Neepawa, Minnedosa, Rossburn, Virden, the Swan Valley Medical Professional Recruitment and Retention Committee, Yellowhead Medical Clinic (Shoal Lake) and the City of Brandon.
