The Kenora area played witness to a record-breaking snowfall on Tuesday (January 18, 2022) that resulted in highway closures, high wind gusts, and poor driving conditions for those on the roads.
Environment Canada Meteorologist, Steven Flisfeder was able to confirm the results of the storm.
“From the Kenora Airport the final tally was 16 cm for yesterday,” Flisfeder said.
Tuesday’s snowstorm was enough to break a 78-year-old snowfall record for Kenora on January 18.
“Based on our record books the previous record was 10.2 cm set in 1944, so this did in fact break the daily record for snowfall for January 18.”
The storm pushed its way up through Northern Michigan and moved its way in Northwestern Ontario.
Moving forward nearing the end of the week there is a chance for the snow to return as the forecast is predicting the white stuff to fall again on Friday (January 21, 2022).
In the first 18 days of January, the Kenora area has seen 33.5 cm of snow, which is above the 28.4 cm average seen for the month.
The storm seen on Tuesday saw the closure of Highway 17 from the Ontario/Manitoba Border to Ignace due to poor driving conditions, and blowing snow.
It also caused the City of Kenora to declare a Significant Weather Event due to the amount of snow that fell to advise residents, pedestrians, and motorists to expect winter maintenance service delays due to the winter storm event.
