The latest COVID-19 numbers are in. 

In the past day, 3,592 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the province with a 34 per cent positivity rate. There are 61,615 known active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta.   

Currently, 1,191 people are in hospital with COVID-19, including 107 in intensive care.    

Beginning Monday (Jan.24) or sooner, some beds in pandemic response units will be ready at Edmonton’s Kaye Clinic and the South Health Campus in Calgary to expand hospital capacity in Alberta. 

Patients moved to a pandemic response unit could be recovering from COVID-19 and deemed at low risk of transmitting the virus or be patients with less complex healthcare needs. 

Three new deaths were reported on Friday, bringing the total to 3,429 since the start of the pandemic.   

Local update                   

Here is the number of active cases in the area:    

  • Fort Saskatchewan: 325 cases              
  • Sherwood Park: 1029 cases              
  • Strathcona County: 273 cases              
  • Sturgeon County: 246 cases              
  • Morinville: 128 cases              
  • Lamont County 40 cases               

Several acute care, continuing care, and supportive living facilities in the area are currently experiencing outbreaks of the virus, including:

  • Chartwell – Emerald Hills Retirement Residence, Sherwood Park 
  • Rivercrest Care Centre, Fort Saskatchewan 
  • Summerwood Village Retirement Residence, Sherwood Park 
  • Aspen House, Morinville 
  • Dr. Turner Lodge, Fort Saskatchewan 
  • Robin Hood Association – Aspen Village, Sherwood Park 
  • Summerwood Village Retirement Residence, Sherwood Park 
  • West Country Hearth, Villeneuve 

Vaccinations      

The total per cent of the population over five immunized with two doses as of Friday:             

  • Fort Saskatchewan: 79.8 per cent             
  • Sherwood Park: 84.5 per cent             
  • Strathcona County: 79.7 per cent             
  • Sturgeon County West (including Morinville): 75 per cent             
  • Sturgeon County East: 73.7 per cent             
  • Lamont County: 71.4 per cent    

A total of 8.12-million doses of the vaccine have been administered in Alberta. 89.5 per cent of the 12+ population has received at least one dose, while 85.7 per cent have received two.
