Cinderella fans will need to wait until the 2022/2023 season to catch La Cenerentola in person.

Manitoba Opera says that are disappointed to postpone the April showing of La Cenerentola, but says they needed to assure everyone is safe.

"It is our responsibility to create a safe working environment throughout the entire run of the show, from the first chorus rehearsal in January until the curtain falls on closing night," Board of Trustees Chair Judith Chambers says. "We were not confident that this would be possible over the next few months."

The comedic take on the Cinderella fairytale posed a financial risk to Manitoba Opera. Chambers says financially, they needed to be in a position to assure fully-staged performances can return.

Instead, an April 2 concert at the Centennial Concert Hall will showcase opera favourites. This could be in person or done by live stream, depending on the health orders.

“With a smaller cast and crew, a concert presents fewer risks than a fully staged production," General Director & CEO Larry Desrochers says. "The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra will be situated on the stage rather than in the confines of the pit, and in the event that an artist is unable to perform, it is less likely that the entire show would have to be cancelled.”

La Cenerentola will be performed in the 2022/2023 season as part of Manitoba Opera's 50th season.

Manitoba Opera says ticket holders will be contacted directly.
